Today is World Day of Social Justice. This day is recognized by the U.N. and its member states and was officially created in 2007 as a result of resolution A/RES/62/10. This day reaffirms the member state’s commitment to the World Social Summit and its mission of “full and productive employment and decent work for all, including for women and young people, as a central objective of relevant national and international policies as well as national development strategies, including poverty reduction strategies” (UN 2010).
This year’s theme is “A Just Transition- Environmentally Sustainable Economies and Societies.” This theme underscores the importance of recognizing the effects of globalization and development on marginalized groups including migrants, indigenous peoples, and women.
From the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon “Let us work together to forge new integrated pathways for social, environmental and economic development rooted in social justice and the promise of a better future for all” (UN 2016).
