A few weeks ago on November 7th, hundreds of people stood waiting outside for hours in the cold to receive a turkey along with a bag of potatoes and box of fixings. ABC 7 was there to cover the story. The food was given out to families who cannot afford to have thanksgiving dinners due to lack of resources.

The event was held and led by the Black McDonald’s Operators Association in the 500 block of West Madison Avenue in Chicago’s South Austin Neighborhood. The Black McDonald’s Operators Association has hosted the event for the past 18 years. More than 2,000 turkeys and canned goods were given out to at least 500 different families.

Ron Lofton of the Black McDonald’s Owners Association said “I think we’re probably going to run out pretty soon. It just speaks to the needs of the community.” Responses were also asked from the people in line for Thanksgiving dinners. “Left my house 5:30, got here at 6. It’s that important to me,” Andre Kellum said to a reporter. He was further quoted as saying “It’s a godsend. It’s God’s gift to everyone.”

There were additional turkey giveaways held on November 10th and November 11th. Thank you to the Black McDonald’s Operators Association for doing this for the past 18 years.
