EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
This panel brings together intellectuals with rich and unique perspectives on the ongoing conflict in Syria. Both panelists are heavily involved with Syria in their day-to-day lives. The audience will get to hear a professor’s hypothesis and a medical expert’s prognosis on the complexities of the conflict. The event will be informal, informative and as always, accompanied by delicious Turkish food.
Laith Al-Saud
Professor at DePaul University
Laith Saud is a lecturer of Islamic World Studies at Depaul University. Laith is a former columnist at al Jazeera, he has been interviewed by national and international media on Islam and Mid-East affairs. He holds a graduate degree from the University of Chicago, and is a long-time martial artist.
A Baghdad native, Al-Saud serves on the Journal of Islamic Law and Culture Editorial Board and is a regular contributor to NPR, recently reporting on interviews he gathered from the Muslim Brotherhood during his visit to Egypt at the time of the Egyptian Revolution.
Zaher Sahloul, M.D.

Zaher Sahloul is a physician, community activist, organizer and leader of several non-profit organizations in the Chicago area. He has extensive non-profit management experience having served as a board member in many civic, educational, health and community-based organizations. He is a founding member and the president of the largest chapter of the Syrian American Medical Society, Midwest chapter. Zaher is also a board member of the National Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and has helped in organizing several of its annual International conferences.
He is an active member of the local Syrian, Arab and Muslim communities in Chicago and has led many initiatives, interfaith dialogues, and alliances with other local civic and grass roots organizations. Zaher has lobbied with other local American Syrian, Arab and Muslim activists, policy-makes and members of Congress, and the media in support of issues concerning the community.
Dr. Sahloul is active at the Interfaith level with Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian and Jewish faith groups. He serves at the National Advisory Board of Bernadin Center of the Catholic Theological Union, and at the Board of advisers of the Center of Christian-Muslim Engagement for Peace and Justice at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
At the Professional level, Dr. Sahloul is a physician at Advocate Christ medical center. He is a founder of the Syrian American medical society, Midwest chapter and its Foundation.He has written several articles about Muslims and Civic Life, Mosques, leadership, Environment, civic engagement and activism from an Islamic perspective. He is married with three children.
