July 16
Nelson Mandela International Day was declared in 2009 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). It is celebrated on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, July 18, and honors his contributions of leadership, dedication, and sacrifices he’s made. Today, Nelson Mandela International Day is recognized annually around the world.
At age 95, Nelson Mandela passed away in 2013. Although he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on. He served 27 years in prison for protesting on human rights. He is a man of several accomplishments such as a winner of a Nobel Peace Prize, an activist, and the first elected president of South Africa.
This day was initially recognized when Nelson Mandela asked for the next generation to make a leadership effort. In recognition of the national holiday, it is asked for people to take part in some way and spare 67 minutes of their time. The number 67 represents the number of years Nelson Mandela served as a leader to public service. People can get involved and take action by simply volunteering or donating to local, or national, organizations.
Nelson Mandela’s fight for freedom and equality has affected many people from around the world. Many groups of people including celebrities, politicians, and the general public, have learned from Mandela’s bravery and devotion for peace on earth.
From all of us here at the Niagara Foundation, we would like to praise Nelson Mandela and encourage everyone to get involved!
