John Smalley: The Ever-Evolving Newspaper Business

HIGHLIGHTS

Niagara Foundation organized a remarkable cultural conversation event with Jack W. Mitchell, professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

John Smalley has been editor of the Wisconsin State Journal for nearly four years. Prior to that he was editor at the La Crosse Tribune from 2002-2008, and before that was editor at the Mason City Globe Gazette from 1997-2002. His newspaper career started in 1977 when he got his first job as a part-time sports writer at the La Crosse Tribune while in college at UW-La Crosse.

Among the highlights for John in Madison was in April of this year when the State Journal was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage for the paper’s work in covering the historic Capitol protests in February/March 2011.
